Medical Show Blog #1

Just recently, I binge-watched four episodes of The Good Doctor. In this ABC series, there are a few main characters: Dr. Shaun Murphy, Dr. Neil Melendez, Dr. Aaron Glassman, Dr. Marcus Andrews, Dr. Claire Browne, and Dr. Jared Kalu. They all represent a plethora of hospital character archetypes. Dr. Shaun Murphy, a high-functioning autistic doctor, is actually greatly representative of what a doctor should be. He is moral and caring, always putting the patient first. For instance, even if he has the slightest inclination that a certain condition could be related to a certain disease, he will test for that disease. He will even drive to patients' houses in the middle of the morning when he finds something wrong. Dr. Melendez and Dr. Andrews are characters who are more authoritarian, who are book followers, and usually, put the profits of the hospital first. They are very reluctant to have Dr. Murphy become a surgeon at their hospital as he is autistic (he might mess up procedures). Dr. Melendez makes Murphy do scut work, though eventually realizes Murphy's value to his team. Also, Andrews feels Melendez is a threat to his position as chief of the surgical department. Dr. Glassman is more of a caring, empathetic, and mentor-like character, as he took in Murphy when he no longer had a family as a child, vouched for him to be a surgeon at the hospital, and gave advice for his personal life. Meanwhile, Dr. Browne and Dr. Kalu are the romantic archetypal characters. They engage romantically at the hospital, however, Dr. Kalu feels he's not appreciated by her. Also, Dr. Browne is also caring, as she tries to balance telling patients the truth, and not getting them upset.

  1. I like the way you are analyzing the show through a character-centric lense. I would recommend that you also do some research about autism, outside of what the show teaches you! This might help you gain a better perspective of what issues Shaun really has.

  2. Dr. Shaun Murphy seems like a very dedicated doctor. On the other hand, the other doctors don't seem as dedicated as Dr. Murphy is. It seems like they are in it maybe for the title of being called a doctor or the money. Do you think Dr. Murphy should be chief of the surgical department?
